34% increase on 2017 numbers so far of migrants crossing the Med to Italy.
The desperate scramble has seen the bulk of an estimated 4,485 refugees cross the Mediterranean to Italy, with the rest pouring in through Spain and Greece.
At this stage in 2017, the figure was 3,335.
The spike has raised the prospect of another summer of chaos at the UK border in Calais as tens of thousands of economic migrants try to sneak into Britain.
MEP Steven Woolfe said: “Politicians at the highest level in Europe have refused to accept that stopping the boats from entering mainland Europe is the only realistic solution to prevent further crossings.
