A 70% increase in fake passports used by migrants in Greece was reported by EU agencies. “Most counterfeit documents were discovered among Syrians, Afghans, Iranians, Turks, Albanians and Eritreans.”

Die Welt (translated):

More and more refugees stuck in Greece are trying to reach other EU countries by plane with fake passports. The number of cases detected had risen from 429 in the first quarter of 2017 to 729 in the second quarter, ie by 70 percent, reported the “Bild” newspaper, citing a report by the EU police department Europol and the EU border police Frontex.

Most counterfeit documents were discovered among Syrians, Afghans, Iranians, Turks, Albanians and Eritreans. Syrians used mainly fake Greek and Italian identity cards or German and Syrian passports. Afghans, on the other hand, were mostly caught with false French identity cards or Korean passports, according to the report.

The preferred destinations for these persons were Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium, and Switzerland as the only non-EU country.
