The sister party is the Christian Social Union in Bavaria. It is in Bavaria while Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is in Germany’s other 15 states.
Horst Seehofer, the leader of Mrs Merkel’s Bavarian sister party the CSU, admitted defeat in a long-running power struggle on Monday afternoon.
Mr Seehofer agreed to step down as prime minister of Bavaria before elections in 2018, abdicating to make way for a more right-wing rival, Markus Söder.
He will stay on as CSU party leader, however, and could gain a ministerial position in Mrs Merkel’s next government.
He had been under pressure to resign since Germany’s September election, which saw the CSU, and Mrs Merkel’s CDU, lose ground to the right.
