Key paragraph: “Yesterday, we reported that Germany had lost 30,000 rejected asylum seekers, however, Welt says the problem with this figure is that it only accounts for those who were registered and receiving migrant benefits – it does not include those who never applied for them in the first place, hence the huge disparity with Vogel’s figures.”
A top migration researcher at a German University estimates that there are up to 520,000 illegal migrants living under the radar, completely unaccounted for in official statistics.
Dita Vogel, top migration expert at the University of Bremen estimates there are up to 520,000 people that have never filed an application to stay in the country. Some of those included in the figures are tourists and students who have overstayed their visa, however, most are believed to have entered the country illegally with no intention of registering.
Vogel calculated her estimate by taking crime statistics, believing illegal migrants to be more likely to commit crimes than legally registered ones, and working out how many there are likely to be based on those.
