THE UK population will top 70 million before the end of the next decade, officials predicted yesterday.
More than half the 4.4 million increase will be due to migration, the Office for National Statistics said.
The projection sparked calls last night for a post-Brexit border crackdown.
Downing Street acknowledged numbers were too high and said Theresa May was determined to get back control over Britain’s frontiers.
The ONS expects the population to increase by 3.6 million, or 5.5 per cent, from an estimated 65.6 million last year to 69.2 million in 2026 before rising to 70 million by 2029.
